Ross Lake Border Crossing

The Ross Lake Border crossing is located at the 49th parallel, separating the US and Canada. The border crossing is in a very remote area in Whatcom county, Washington. It is almost made up entirely of absence. There are no walls, no people, no gates. Just the occasional hiker. but even the best of hikers are up for a challenge in the ross lake area, the lake being 23 miles long is also a challenge to kayak. with campgrounds being the only real infrastructure to exist in this area besides the lodge down by the damn, the goal is to create a place where hikers, kayakers, whomever can get a good source of water, some food, a place to rest and even some medical assistance if needed
The first phase of this project was all about threshold and interpreting what we thought a threshold was, the next phase was creating a threshold for Carpenter hold. Above is the threshold I created for Carp it was named the moving exhibition. The idea was to bring the essence of Carpenters gallery to your attention by extruding the pathways. Placing them on opposite corners of Carpenter brought about the idea of the corner and how important the corner is to the threshold. That is where I got the analytical drawing on the right.
Thinking about the experience at different corners and the different shapes they take on my big idea was to place the building's center right in the middle of the 49th parallel. Separating the two down the center marks the threshold of the corner, the threshold of the two different countries, and the threshold of the "the cut" down the 49th parallel where you can experience the literal separation of the two countries, It's about a 20' tree line cut.
